The Cleveland Indians started off well taking two of three in their first series against the now unstoppable Oakland A's thanks to Jim Johnson's poor pitching performance. But since then they have only won a few of their series match ups while also getting swept back to back series against the Giants and Angels. The team that many were looking to, expecting improvements after making the playoffs last season, the Indians have been not appeared to be in the fight for the AL Central Division. Though they currently sit at the bottom with a 22-25 record due to lack of performance from Axford and Masterson on the mound, and barley any offensive support from Santana and Swisher, they did just perform and impressive sweep over the dominant Detroit Tigers. Two of the three victories where walk-offs, but in my opinion there has been one key bat keeping that team alive. He is without a doubt the surprise player in the American League so far on the year. Michael Brantley has provided the offensive support the Indians have been missing from their many other other well known names. Brantley is hitting .302 with nine HRs and 36 RBIs, as he stroke the 2 run walk-off on Monday. Brantley only hit 10 HRs last season, as he looks to easily pass that number now hitting hire in the lineup after Francona made his much needed changes. Brantley was expected to hit 5-7th in the lineup, but he has shown that he is the most important bat in the lineup, on pace to shap his own HR, RBI, BA, and OBP record. I hope to see him on the AL All-Star team, as he deserves some credit for his great performance at the plate. Brantley needs Swisher, Santana, Bourne, and Cabrera to join him to lift the team over their division rivals. The fact that Brantley leads the team in the 5 key offensive stats is a little sad, he can't carry the team on his own. We will see if this sweep of the Tigers is the boost he and his teammates needed.
