MLB Predictions: AL West

Day two of baseball, as many teams are getting their first game of the season in today. Unfortunately the weather isn't to friendly in some parts of the country, as a few games are postponed frustrating fantasy owners I am sure. Well its time to put in my picks for the last division, the AL West a division that has got some strong teams with good aces and MVP bats.

Carlos Correa, boy is that guy a beast. He is only 21 but already looking like he's been a professional for years. Watch him smack 30 plus this year while stealing at least 30 as well. To go with him offensively Houston has Altuve, Springer, and Gomez who will all put up great numbers and make them one of the leading scoring teams in the league. Now Houston is starting with a few people on the DL, as Gattis is out of the DH spot and McCullers out of the rotation. Shouldn't be to much to worry about however, as the addition of Fister should be beneficial for the team and Giles in the bullpen. I think Houston will dominate the AL West, with a guy like Dallas Keuchel (Photo) and such a powerful offense it will be tough to overcome this team this year. Astros take the AL West with ease as htey get ready with their battle in the ALCS with Toronto.
Like Houston, I think the Rangers have a great lineup this season as well. The addition of Desmond, they should have some good pop lead by Fielder (Photo) and Beltre. I think Deshields will be impressive this season batting in the leadoff spot, as he was just part of a three run inning against King Felix. Cole Hamels has looked good on his first start, allowing two runs so far. But he should put together a good year picking up 13 plus wins and having an ERA in the low threes. Darvish is out to start the season, but he hopefully wont be out long for the Rangers, as he and Hamels make a great 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. The Rangers need to stay healthy if they want to try and catch Houston at some point in the season, but I see them as contenders of a wildcard seat. The Rangers will be keeping their fans entertained with power, hopefully their rotation can bring them wins along with it.
The Mariners have a lot to look forward to this season, as they got a lineup that can do some damage. You can expect Cano to have a better season, especially with Nelson Cruz hitting behind him. I really like Kyle Seager (Photo), he is one of my favorite players in the league with his pop and clutch, he is a guy that comes through when you need him to. His $100 million contract seemed a little crazy when I first heard about it, but now I would say it is a deal for Seattle. Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma are the kind of guys you want at the top of your rotation, as Felix can over power you then fool you with the off speed stuff. While Iwakuma always gets his victims to chase with his sinker ball. The addition of Aoki should help run production, as he will get on for Seager, Cano, and Cruz. I am not so sure about Iannetta and Adam Lind due to their poor numbers last year, but Leonys Martin is a good all around guy who will help in the outfield and at the plate. Seattle also picked up Wade Miley who hasn't looked to sharp in his career, but going from ballparks like Chase Field and Fenway to Safeco should help him out a good amount. Seattle will have a good year, as they will hunt for a seat in the wildcard matchup.
The Los Angeles Angels have some of the best bats in baseball. Mike Trout (Photo) is a guy who will go 40-40 will his amazing power and speed. I mean we've all seen him jump up at that wall and rob homers, the guy is unstoppable. Pujols looks to be healthy and ready to hit 25-30 homers this year, as the additions of Simmons and Escobar should help the Angels both offensively and defensively. The Angels real problem is out there in the mound. Weaver was known as their ace, but has his degenerative spine problem now and hasn't looked to good. Garret Richards is making the start on opening day for them tonight, but don't expect ace type numbers from him either. The Angels have a good bullpen lead by Street and Joe Smith, but they will need to get help in the rotation if they want to make the playoffs. I also don't expect the team to have a very good batting average, so unless Trout will be the only regular guy on base, they need to sacrifice some of their power, such as C.J. Cron or Calhoun for a little more connection. The Angels always have a chance with a guy like Trout in the lineup, but it will be a challenge to make the playoffs.
I like the Oakland A's this year. They got a good group of guys who I think fit well within their roster. What they got to fix is the ballpark they play in, I mean don't get me wrong, I love the Coliseum. I mean I worked in it for two seasons, but it just seems to bring down their players. It is like a graveyard for power hitters, as look at Donaldson's numbers in his year away from Oakland, I mean MVP. The A's added guys like Khris Davis and Yonder Alonso who have the potential for 25 plus homers. These guys will look great on the road, but back in Oakland I think their numbers will take a dive. I like Billy Burns (Photo) and Danny Valencia, these guys will put up good averages and keep their offense going as they may go through some power struggles. Many don't expect much from Oakland this year, but if there was to be a team to surprise everyone, it would be these guys. Sonny Gray is missing his start today due to food poisoning, but he should have a great season. I just hope they don't end up dishing away their players this year and get a new ballpark soon.
   AL West Records:
1. Astros 96-66
2. Rangers 87-75
3. Mariners 80-82
4. Angels 78-84
5. Athletics 70-92

MLB Predictions: NL West

Well today is opening day, as the Pirates came out on top against Wainwright and the Cardinals and I am watching Stroman give me great fantasy numbers with Toronto beating the Rays late in the game. It time to get my final division picks in before I make the big picks for the postseason. The NL West will be interesting this season, as it will be a battle between three teams. Thats right you guessed it, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Giants. Health will be the thing that decides this division, as some big names have already joined the DL.
The Dodgers have taken the division a couple years in a row, but have a tough challenge ahead of them if they want to do it again. Injuries are already bugging them, with Anderson and Ethier out and their pitching staff not looking so sharp. Kershaw is a beast, you can't replace him with anyone. But following Kershaw a lot of questions rise. How will Ryu do coming back? Why is Kazmir looking so slow on the mound? And what will Maeda bring to the table? Well I am putting these guys on top yet again as they have a guy who I think will make a big difference. Corey Seager (photo) should be amazing this season and put up numbers to shock everyone. I think will their good offense, they will be able to overcome some flaws on the mound, plus they already have the highest payroll so you can bet they will acquire some names at some point. Dodgers will have to fight with their division foes, but they will be chilling in the top seat in the west come October.
Can the Giants keep their even year tradition going? They picked up some big names in the offseason, adding Cueto and Samardzija to the rotation and Span to the outfield. With Bumgarner leading things off, you would expect this team to be dominant on the mound. But they have not looked to good through spring training. Plus health is a real concern for them, as I bet Span, Pagan, and Belt join the DL at some point, along with Cueto, Peavy, and Cain from the rotation. These guys need to stay healthy if they want to get into the playoffs. Hopefully Posey (Photo) can stay behind the plate, as their pitchers numbers are so much better when he is in the squat. The Giants need leadership from Pence and Posey to be successful and of course some more pop from Brandon Crawford who amazed everyone last year. The Giants will put up a great fight, but a wildcard seat will be the best they can do, but like I said only if they stay healthy.
Originally I was going to put the Diamondbacks on top int he division. But after Pollock fractured his elbow my faith in Arizona has gone down a bit. The pickups of Greinke (Photo), Miller, and Segura are huge. This team was known for their bats with Goldschmidt in the lineup, but now they will be known for both and very dangerous. Segura has shown great numbers through spring training, as the Diamondbacks seemed almost unbeatable. With Clippard in the bullpen now, blown saves should not be to much of an issue, especially with how late in games their starters will be going. Having Greinke, Miller, and Corbin as the leading three will be tough to beat. Like the other two however, can these guys stay healthy. Corbin has DL history, while Miller and Greinke are coming off high inning total seasons. Arizona will be in contention and possibly fight for the wildcard as well. Don't be surprised if they go on crazy streaks, winning 9 in a row then tripping for 5-6 in a row. I like Arizona this year, as they should have league leaders in almost every category.
San Diego was gathering everyone's attention last year, making tons of crazy deals but it obviously did not work out for them. This year they were a little more calm, trying to fix their flaws adding names such as veteran Alexi Ramirez and Jon Jay. These guys should have good defense this season, as they have plugged Will Myers in at first now, but they are lacking pop. I don't think this offense will be very impressive as they only too guys I think you can count on for RBIs will both hit the DL. Kemp has hip issues while Will Myers always seems to go on the DL early and for a good amount of time. their rotation isn't top notch either, as Shields (Photo) is on the decline walking to many guys and Cashner and Ross are just to wild. They got good heat and should put together K's, but will be putting guys on base for free and then surrendering the big multirun blast. San Diego will come up short this season, as we will see if they look to sell like they did with some of their bats and arms in the offseason.
The Colorado Rockies are a team that can hit, but not pitch as they will be suffering on the mound this season. I actually really like a lot of guys in their lineup. LeMahieu is a guy with great contact and a great glove, Blackmon is a greta leadoff hitter who will provide some pop as well, Carlos Gonzalez will hit 30 plus homers at Coors Field if he can stay off the DL that is, and of course Nolan Arenado (Photo) is like a third baseman god with how he can hit and field. Arenado deserves to be in MVP will his numbers, as I bet he smacks 35 plus this year. These guys tried to beef up the bullpen with trading for McGee, but I think they will really miss Dickerson and his power. Their starting rotation is the problem, as no one would be on the roster of a few other teams. De La Rosa isn't anything like he used to be, plus the DL is where he needs to start calling home. I like Lyles, but don't expect anything to special from him or anyone else, as they will all have ERAs over four. Rockies will finish at the bottom of the division and hopefully for their sake don't have to dish away any of their young stars.
NL West Records:
1. Dodgers 89-73
2. Giants 87-75
3. Diamondbacks 85-77
4. Padres 70-92
5. Rockies 67-95

MLB Predictions: AL Central

This division is really a toss up, I know last years World Series winner is from the AL Central, but each of these teams has some great weapons that could have the year to get them into the postseason. The big difference between teams is the level of pitching, as only one team has the starters to take them far. Everyone else picked up or resigned offensive weapons, but it will come down to how effective each team can be on the mound.
The city of Cleveland has gone a while without being able to raise a trophy, as jersey burning seems to be their annual tradition, with Mr. Manziel being the most recent addition. But I really like what I think the Indians will be able to do this coming season, as Brantley looks to be healthy and they got the arms. With Kluber, Carrasco, Salazar, and Bauer these Indians are going to tough to hit off of. They should each post an ERA under four and will be putting up the W's needed to come away with the division. The challenge they will face is going deep enough into the game, as I don't trust their bullpen very much. Don't get me wrong, Cody Allen is a great closer but they will need to made an acquisition or two to beef up their bullpen to bring home the last season wins. I really like Lindor. This kid has an amazing glove and can hit for average while also providing occasional power. He is a big piece of their future and will be a difference maker this season, as they hope Kipnis and Santana can stay healthy and have their All-Star seasons to support Brantley. The Royals and Indians will be battling for the number seat all year, but I think Cleveland comes away with it in the end.
Kansas City is coming off a great World Series victory, beating one of the best rotations in baseball. They brought back power hitting outfielder Alex Gordon, but weren't able to keep the big weapons in their rotation. They tried to make up for it with a good amount of signings including Kennedy and Medlen, but they don't have an ace or even someone I would consider to be a strong number two in the rotation. Volquez has been around and is now declining in his career, while Kennedy isn't what he used to be either. Ventura definitely has a future, but right now he still isn't hitting the zone enough to take that ace role. This team does excel in both hitting and bullpen though, as Wade Davis and is one of the best if not the best in baseball. Don't get me started on what their lineup can do, with Cain, Perez, Hosmer, and Moustakas this team will put up great offensive numbers. The question is will those be enough to support their rotation when they may be facing pitchers such as Kluber and Zimmermann regularly. Kansas City will have a good season and will go far if they are able to pick up and big name pitcher at some point in the season. Look for them to fight for the division and if they come up short there, one of those wildcard seats. They have the confidence right now and know they can go far which will be beneficial all season.
The Tigers are coming off a disappointing year, as they signed a couple big names to try and get back in the picture. With the addition of Upton, this team has got some good pop, but the question is if they can stay healthy, as a couple guys are already having injury issues. Like usual Victor Martinez is dinged up and may start the year on the DL, while Cameron Maybin took a ball off the wrist and looks to be out as the season starts. Word was he was getting batting practice in, but they have Anthony Gose to cover center while he is out. With J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera, Upton will see pitches batting in the number two spot, so we will see how much of a difference he can make. Health is another issue out on the mound as well, as with a healthy Verlander and Sanchez this rotation looks dangerous. But I wouldn't count on them to avoid the DL all season. Zimmermann was a great pick up, but I think he will be the only starter with consistent numbers this year. The bullpen has some good tools, but blown saves wont be rare for the Tigers. I thin Detroit has a chance to make the playoffs, but only if they stay healthy and Cabrera reminds all the arms in his division why they should fear him at the plate.
The White Sox were busy in the offseason acquiring some bats to support Abreu, as they picked up Todd Fraizer, Brett Lawrie, Alex Avila, Austin Jackson, and Jimmy Rollins. I think Fraizer is a great pick up, as his pop will be looking good in their ballpark. Lawrie will probably have a career high in homers, especially after leaving a place like Oakland were homers seem impossible. This team will be putting up much different offensive numbers and I would put Abreu in MVP talk with the pitches he will be seeing and runs he will be driving in. These guys weakness will be out on the mound. Chris Sale is a beast, by far one of the best in baseball and though I thought he might get traded last year, they couldn't rebuild while both him and Abreu are in their prime. This team needs to win now, but they will need to pick up another starter or get an amazing season out of a couple other guys in the rotation. Quintana could finally have a winning season, as he puts up great innings but can never seems to get the wins. Rodon could be a huge weapon this season, as he does have a great career ahead of him. We will see if they can lock it down and come through this season. With Robertson in the bullpen they just need some good starts to give their offense a chance to put up enough runs. It is possible to make the playoffs, but their pitching will have to prove it to me before I get my hopes up for Chicago.
The Twins lack one thing that would really make a good difference for them, leadership as they are a team full of skill but not much confidence. They will get some good pop out of bats like Dozier, Sano, and hopefully Park. But we will see how well Byung Ho Park adjusts to baseball in the states, as there is a lot of expectation put on him. Mauer isn't the guy with power anymore, but he will hopefully get some good RBI numbers. Their rotation is really questionable, as no one is a number one type starter and Hughes and Santana numbers haven't really been impressive. This team is definitely improving coming into this season, but it will be a long shot for them to make the playoffs. Some surprising seasons would be necessary, along with a couple trades to bring in some dominant help on the mound.
AL Central Records:
1. Indians 87-75
2. Royals 85-77
3. Tigers 82-80
4. White Sox 79-83
5. Twins 72-90

MLB Predictions: AL East

The AL East looks to be very competitive this season, as I see four teams fighting for the division title down until late September. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays are all in the same boat, while the Orioles and Rays have opposite issues. It will come down to who stays healthy and makes the right acquisitions. Winner of the division will need at least 95 wins and it will come down to the final few games in October.
Lets start with the Blue Jays, these guys have pop. Donaldson is coming off his MVP season, as Bautista and Encarnacion are playing for new contracts. These guys are who everyone in the AL have to fear at the plate, as I think their three big bats will put together more than one hundred homeruns. Kevin Pillar will be batting leadoff, and he will be a big difference maker as well. He will be that extra RBI for each power bat if not Tulowitzki or Martin. The loss of Price looked tough for Toronto, but I think Stroman will fill in well as the teams ace. I just don't know how well the rest of the rotation can hold up. J.A. Happ should put together some wins, but I honestly don't have much faith in Dickey and Estrada. If the Jays want to lock up the division, they will need to add another arm to the rotation at some point in the season. The Blue Jays could also look for another left handed bat to add to the lineup, as they do have a lot of righties. Perhaps another power bat such as lefty Joey Votto could make a great addition. I expect Toronto to battle it out until the end and either take the division or the first wildcard seat.
Boston made the big signing bringing David Price over to lead their rotation after their terrible pitching
performance last season. The Red Sox have taken last place two years in a row now, as they need healthy and productive seasons out of David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, and most importantly Clay Buchholz. They are in the same shoes as Toronto and will need to make a deal to add to their rotation in order to come away with the division. Word right now is, they may deal away one of the worst signings in the last ten years and make Pablo Sandoval San Diego's problem while getting James Shields in return. They have Travis Shaw to play third if they let go of Pablo and could use Shields who is not making much of a difference with the Padres. Hanley Ramirez has his new position and Boston hopes he makes a big difference offensively. With the addition of Shields or another pitcher, I expect the Sox to put on a good show and be in division talk all season.

The Yankees made some deals this offseason that didn't get to much attention but will be big difference makers for their offense. Alex Rodriguez has announced his retirement after this season, as the Yankees need to get names like him, Teixeira, and Sabathia off their payroll. The pick ups of Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro will need to pay off, as their bats along with Ackley and Hicks will need to be productive as the older guys in the lineup such as Beltran and AROD averaged missing 35 games last year. The Yankees have Tanaka at the top of the rotation, but after that I am not sure if they can rely to much on Pineda and Severino in their hitter friendly ball park. Like their rivals, I expect the Yankees to acquire another starter at some point during the season. The Yankees should be able to stay in the picture and make a good reach for the playoffs, but health will be their main issue this season both on the mound and at the plate. The main strength of the Yankees will be the bullpen, though they will be missing Chapman due to his suspension. I expect the Yankees to come up a bit short the division, but battle for a wildcard seat.
The Tampa Bay Rays will be very interesting this season. Like usual they have some great pitching, as I expect Chris Archer to fight for the CY Young this year. With Odorizzi, Moore, and Smyly behind him they have the best rotation in the division but are slacking big time in the bullpen and when it comes to the bat. Sure they have Evan Longoria, but he can't stay off the DL and his numbers have not been impressive over the last few seasons. The Rays need some miracles with the bat from guys such as Steve Pearce and Corey Dickerson. That or need to pick up some bats over trade, which the Rays are not really known for doing during the regular season. The Rays pitching will keep them alive until late in the year, but a few to many blown saves and lack of offense will knock them out of division title talk come September.
The Orioles have one heck of a lineup after their pickups of Trumbo and Alvarez. They already had Davis on his new deal, Adam Jones, healthy Wieters, and MVP potential Manny Machado. These guys are going to hit a lot of homers this year, the only question is if they will hit enough. They scored almost half their runs last season through long balls and will probably have a higher percentage this year adding power but not consistency to the lineup. The real problem for the Orioles though is their rotation. They are starting off with Chris Tillman who never lived up to his potential and follow him with washed up starters such as Gallardo and Jimenez. I don't think one of these guys will have an ERA under four, especially playing against their division. Look for Baltimores bats to be amazing one game and then get shut out the next, as this team is relying completely on power. If they can destroy aces like Price, Tanaka, and Archer then they can make a push for the playoffs, but I think injuries and a bunch of strikeouts will slow them to much. Expect a great year from Machado, with an average near .300 and 25 plus homers, but he wont be able to carry the team.
AL East Records:
1. Blue Jays  96-66
2. Red Sox 94-68
3. Yankees 83-79
4. Rays 81-81
5. Orioles 70-92

NL East Predictions
Time is ticking, as coaches, players, and especially fans count down the final week of spring training. It has come time to put in my picks for the 2016 season and we are going to start with the NL East
division. The New York Mets made a trip to World Series last season thanks to their amazing pitching and clutch hitting from a couple guys named Cespedes and Murphy. Daniel Murphy may have taken off to a division rival, but they were able to bring back Cepedes on his big contract and acquire new names such as Neil Walker. The big difference maker on this team will be the guys on the mound, as they are only getting better. Their is a small worry about them being a bit fatigued after the long postseason, but I think Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, and Nolan Syndagard are only going to be more impressive this season. The Mets have one of the best pitching rotations and their record will show for it. The Mets will take the NL after solid battle from their opponents down at the Nations capital.
Bryce Harper, that is the story in DC as the Nationals look to regroup after a disappointing 2015.
Harper looks ready to put together another amazing season and possibly another MVP award. With Dusty Baker now at the helm, the Nationals now look to hunt down the Mets with their good pop and strong rotation. When you got Scherzer at the front followed by two very underrated guys, Strasberg and Gonzalez, you have a rotation that will put a good fight no matter the ball park. I also expect a strong year from Anthony Rendon as long as he can stay healthy. The only things that worry me when it comes to the Nats, is Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmermann. They have looked good in spring training, but they both can't stay off the DL and their numbers have not been very impressive recently. Look for the Nationals to put up a good fight, but I say Wildcard is best they can do.
The Miami Marlins look to be a dangerous team. They have a new coaching staff this season, with Don
Mattingly filling in as the new manager and Barry Bonds reappearing in the league as the new hitting coach. With bats like Stanton and Yelich I see as a powerful offense, but not one that gets on base consistently. Jose Fernandez is an amazing arm to take the ace role, but then there is not much after that. Mattingly will be a good fit with Miami, as I think the Marlins will be a team that starts hot and hangs around until September, but due to things such as injuries they will fall out of the playoff picture late in the season. Also incase you didn't hear, Barry Bonds was able to beat the entire team in a homerun competition which does not put much faith in their bats.
The Philadelphia Phillies have not been impressing anyone for the last few years and I don't think that
will change this year. Now don't get me wrong, I think with their young bats and arms, such as Franco and Hellickson they are a team on the rise and will be contending not to far into the future. But they still don't have the weapons to make a big enough difference to take on the amazing rotations within their divisions. They have Crawford for a great glove in the infield, but he just doesn't seem ready offensively. Their bullpen is rather good and they should get good innings out of guys like Charlie Morton, but with Ryan Howard still slowing them down the Phillies will be in a fight with Atlanta to avoid last place in the East.
The Atlanta Braves dished away all their big name players in a big yard sale, and with Freeman still on the roster it may still be in process. The Braves did add a few noticeable names with Aybar and Inciarte coming in deals sending away much more valuable names like Shelby Miller and Anderlton Simmons, but they will have some of the worst offense in the NL even with an a possible MVP bat Freeman in the lineup. I still don't really understand why the Braves had to sell out, as all their bats and arms were under the age of 35 and had great potential, with Heyward and Gattis also on the list. The Braves will be fighting with Rockies, Phillies, and possibly Brewers for worst record in the NL as the headed for a disappointing year. If I was Freeman or Markakis I would hoping to be dealt to a contender.
NL East Records:
1. Mets 93-69
2. Nationals 87-75
3. Marlins 79-83
4. Phillies 64-98
5. Braves 61-101

Royal Finish

The Kansas City Royals have taken not only their first division title in 30 years, but now their first World Series Championship. The Royals take it four games to one in the series, redeeming themselves from the painful feeling they suffered in last years World Series. Wade Davis got the third called strike on the inside conner against Flores in the bottom of the twelve inning to wrap it up and get the celebrating under way with their 7-2 game five victory. Christian Colon drove in the big game winning run in the top of twelve, stepping in for his first at-bat of the series and picking up his first RBI in 41 days, making the big difference and driving in the first of five runs in the inning. This is the second World Series Championship for the Kansas City Royals, as they took home their first on 1985.
I thought a bit more of a fight would be put up in this series, as I predicted a seven game Royals win, but it only took them five games, as they wrapped it up at Citi Field. But it you look at the series, they were just a tough group to beat. From Cain, Escobar, and Hosmer in that lineup, guys who would not get put away easily, not nearly as many strikeouts as deGrom and Harvey were used to, the Royals offense was there ready to take advantage of any mistakes. While the Royals pitching staff did their job, making great starts and doing what was most important winning the bullpen battles. As Joe Buck said, the Astros, Blue Jays, and now Mets have learned not to take on a fight with their bullpen, as the Royals blanked all their opponents.
The Mets did make their mistakes, from the blown save in game one, to the errors in game four, and the mistake of letting Harvey continue in tonights final game, the Royals did catch their breaks and force the Mets to suffer for their errors. Salvador Perez, Mike Moustakas, and Alex Gordon were among the few who did a great job taking advantage of the great opportunities to bring in runners and get on base. Perez was awarded the WS MVP award, as he is the first catcher to win it since 1992. The Royals are recovering from last seasons loss, and are celebrating tonight. Congrats to Kansas City!

World Series Predictions
The World Series starts up tomorrow in Kansas City, as the rested Mets head in to take on the series-seasoned Royals. The Mets are using their Dark Knight Matt Harvey on the mound to take on the Edison Volquez. I expect this to be a great series, as the Mets pitching takes on the consistent small ball bats of Kansas City. The Royals are returning for their second straight World Series after their loss to San Francisco last season where Madison Bumgarner shut them down. The difference in this series will be if deGrom, Harvey, or one fo the Mets arms, if not multiple can come through like Bumgarner did last season. The Royals are a different type of team than the Dodgers and Cubs with their bats. Both of the Mets previous opponents swung big for the walls, so they often swung threw pitches leading to a good amount of strikeouts for the Mets. But the Royals are a team that puts the ball in play, from Escobar, who took home the ALCS MVP, to Zobrist and Cain they have shown they are not a team that gives away free outs. If the Mets wants to take the series they will need to bring the Royals down to that level, they will need to show them stuff they can't handle in order to slow their offense down. The Mets will also need NLCS MVP
Murphy to keep things up, maybe not pure power but consistent hitting in order to get on in front of others. Cespedes is my big question, he reports feeling better but apparently not a full 100%. The Mets will need him to be doing what he has been since he was acquired. He has been the RBI machine on their team, with clutch hit and a good amount of long bombs.
The Royals are going into another World Series and this time I think they are more ready for it. After taking the Wild Card last year and breaking through to face the experienced Giants they put up a great fight, but came up short. Now that they have been there, they will be more ready and know how to handle things. After losing last year, the Royals have come in with more determination expecting to get this far. That is what will be the difference maker for them. Majority of the team was in the same shoes and does not want to suffer the tough defeat yet again. So I am taking the Royals in seven games. The Mets will win close ones with deGrom and Harvey on the mound, but Cueto and Ventura will come through for Kansas City in a series that is decided by the consistent bats and motivation of the Royals. They will take their first one since 1985, which would be their perfect turn a solid 30 years later.

MLB DS Predictions

The Division Series get underway today, as the Rangers head into Toronto and the Astros visit the Royals. Starting tomorrow the Cubs will face their division rival and battle the Cardinals, as the Mets visit Hollywood and take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now the playoffs seem to be decided by pitching, as we saw in the Wildcard games with Keuchel and Arrieta closing the door and giving their teams the win. But in the Rangers Bluejays battle I think it will be offense that makes the difference, which is why I am taking the Blue Jays over the Rangers. Look for Donaldson and the power hitting duo behind him to provide enough pop to support their pitching and give the Jays the series win. I am sure the Blue Jays are hungry, as that team hasn't been there since 1993, so with Price leading the way on the mound and the power bats there to support him, Hamels and Fielder will fall short 3-1 in the five game series.
Later today the Astros and Royals will go at it in Kansas City, as the Royals are using Ventura to start their first game while Houston is putting out Colin McHugh. I found this interesting, as it appears to be the Royals attempt to save Cueto to take on Keuchel. Both teams have great pitching, as it will probably be Volquez vs Kazmir at some point in the series. The difference maker will be the consistency of the offense and that is why the Royals will win this series. The Astros bats swing through to many pitches and end up striking out. The Royals are much more consistent at at least putting the ball in play, that will get them the sac-fly they need to be the difference in these match-ups. Look for the Royals to take the series 3-2 to move on to the ALCS.
Tomorrow the Cardinals and Cubs are meeting up for the tough division fight as it will be Lester vs his former teammate Lackey. This is a series that will be decided by pitching. We saw it yesterday, Arrieta shut the Pirates up with his game on the mound. This series will be decided by which team can keep the others quiet in low scoring one point games. I think the youngsters on Chicago with Rizzo will be the difference makers of failure or success. They are on fire right now, they have the confidence after pushing out the Pirates and will be the reason the Cubs knock out the Cardinals in an upset NLDS.
Jacob deGrom will face Clayton Kershaw in the first game in LA, as the Dodgers and Mets will battle with one big name on offense being the difference in this series. Cespedes, he will be reason the Mets move on or not. With how clutch his bat has been, the Mets looked unstoppable going into the playoffs.  I think the Dodgers will take this series though, being shorter series best out of five, Kershaw and Greinke are two unbeatable weapons that will be tough for the Mets. Kershaw was not impressive in the playoffs last year, we will see if Cespedes can make him look that way again. But I predict the Dodgers to take it 3-1 and move on to NLCS.

MLB Expansion?

MLB Commissionare Rob Manfred was in Mexico speaking with baseball officials about possibly putting a new MLB team south of the border.  If MLB was to expand, they could place a team somewhere in Mexico that could appeal to a whole new market and also draw a lot more interest towards the league from more people in the US. Montreal has been wanting a team again, so if there was to be an expansion two teams would probably be created place a team up north and one down south. Manfred says this is not something that would happen immediately, as they would have preseason and travel games in Mexico to help decide if this is a situation that could work and also help pick out a good location for the team. Manfred also shared that he would most likely change the divisions to match that of the current NFL divisions. Male it eight totals divisions with four team in each one. I ask, could this possibly open more seats in the MLB playoffs as well? But Manfred reports having 32 franchises and eight divisions over a 162 games season would make things easier to schedule and manage. Now it is possible that Manfred places a team in Mexico without expanding the league as well. Relocation is always an option for a team that needs to move, similar to what the word is about the Oakland Raiders in the NFL. A couple new teams would be interesting, I'd love to see how they reorganized the divisions and what kind of rivalries may be separated or kept together.

MLB Postseason

We've reached the end of the regular season. While the NL was almost fully decided, the AL had a lot on the line today. First off the Pittsburgh Pirates clinched home field for the Wildcard game with their win over the Reds this afternoon. Back to back seasons with the NL Wildcard taking place at PNC Park, as the Pirates look for a better outcome this time. It should be a good matchup between the Cubs and Pirates, as I expect Arrieta to take the mound against Cole. I know Pirate fans don't want to hear this, but I think Arrieta will be lights out yet again and hold the Pirates bats down leading to the Cubs visiting the Cardinals in the division round.
The AL had a lot more at stake today, as the Toronto Blue Jays were looking to take home field advantage away from the Royals. But the Tampa Bay Rays got in the way beating the Jays 12-3, while the Royals won today against the Twins. So Kansas City will hold home field, as they look to represent the American League in the World Series for the second season in a row. The Texas Rangers locked up the AL West today, as the got the win they needed that also eliminated the Angels from the playoffs. The Astros were going into today looking at three different possible outcomes. They could the division, the wildcard, or get eliminated. The Astros lost their game 5-3 against the Diamondbacks, but caught the break of the Angels losing as well to the team they were trying to catch. The Astros will now head into New York to fight the Yankees in the AL Wildcard game. Like the NL game, I expect the road team to come away on top, as Keuchel should be representing the Astros on the mound and from what I have seen this year, I have a lot of confidence in him. The Astros would get through to take the Royals, which would be a great matchup.
The other playoff set matchups are Rangers going into Toronto, which will be a who's hot an who's not type duel. It will depend on which team
is seeing the ball better and hitting in the clutch, as both teams, well realistically more the Blue Jays, are known for offense and providing pop to bring home the wins. It will be tough to out do Donaldson, even with Hamilton and Fielder. In the NL the Mets will be visiting the Dodgers. This series is quiet the opposite, as both team are known for pitching with Greinke and Kershaw on one side, then Harvey and deGrom and others with the Mets. I expect low scoring games with a single big fly being the difference in games. Dodgers did just reactivate Puig, hoping he can resume and be a difference maker.  Fun news of the day, Ichiro took the mound for the first time in his career today for the Marlins. It was hilarious and fun to watch him take his windup and deliver the pitch.

Arrieta No Hitter, Second Deadline Comes With Deals

Congrats to Jake Arrieta who not only became the leader in baseball in wins, but did it with a no-hitter. Arrieta no hit the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were also no hit by Mike Fiers just eight days before, in a 2-0 victory at Dodgers Stadium. He was lights out Sunday night, putting away a season high on strikes with 12 K's. Arrieta celebrated with his teammates after the game, as they all slipped into their pajamas getting ready for their flight home. There was some controversy, as Dodgers infielder Enrique Hernandez smacked a one-hop to Starlin Castro at second. Castro couldn't handle the ball and spit away from him, the ruling on the field was an error but the Dodgers disagreed and wanted to be credited with a hit. But Arrieta finished the game off, picking up the sixth no-hitter of the season. The Cubs continue to increase their lead in the wildcard, as the Giants fell to the Cardinals that night.
positive impact on both sides of the ball and help clinch that spot for Chicago.
But today, the Giants were one of the four teams that made a last second deal. The Giants acquired Alejandro De Aza from the Boston Red Sox for Class A lefty Luis Ysla. The Giants also receive $650,000 of the remaining $833,000 on De Aza'a contract. With Hunter Pence out yet again, the Giants were in a need of an outfield bat to accompany Marlon Byrd who is fitting in well with his new team. This is the second season in a row De Aza has been dealt at the waiver line, as the White Sox sent him to Baltimore last season where he started this year before ending up in Boston. Since joining the Red Sox he has hit well, batting .292 but has not been receiving much playing time as of late. His ability to play all three outfield positions should come in handy for the Giants as they seem to put and different set of guys out deep everyday. They are facing the Dodgers in this week looking to catch up in the NL West.
The Dodger picked up Justin Ruggiano and cash today from the Mariners for a player to be named later. The Dodgers are in need of help to hold onto the their 3 1/2 game lead as Enrique Hernandez and Yasiel Puig have both Howie Kendrick on the DL recently with hamstring issues. The Dodgers are not only missing a few key bats, but are not getting much production from some of their big names especially Joc Perderson who is hitting .110 going into tonight match against the Giants. The Dodgers have been making their deals, such as Chase Utley to try an cover up their many injury holes.
The Mariners weren't done there, as like their former closer Fernando Rodney, they dealt outfielder Austin Jackson to the Cubs for a player to be named and an international draft spot. 28 year old Austin Jackson will provide some more offensive support, not that they seem to need any with Arrieta, as the Cubs went into today with a 5 1/2 lead on the Giants. Jackson was dealt from the Tigers to the Mariners last season and went into today ready to bat lead off but was scratch a few hours before the game. Over the season Jackson was hitting .282 with eight long balls and 38 RBIs. The Cubs have had a few minor injuries in their outfield and could use the improvements on defense late in their games. Jackson should make a positive impact on both sides of the ball and help clinch that spot for Chicago.

The Royals also added an outfielder picking up 34 year old Jonny Gomez from the Atlanta Braves along with an undisclosed amount of cash for shortstop Luis Valenzuela. Gomes is joining his seventh team in under five years, as he happily heads to the AL leading Royals. Gomez only has had 195 at-bats on the year, but has seven homers and 22 RBIs while batting .221. The Royals need some power off the bench and a guy to fill in when off days are needed. The Royals look to beef up and make sure they come out on top this season.

Contenders Add Late Inning Arms
The Seattle Mariners let go of their GM due to the disappointing season after a lot of expensive offseason transactions over the past couple seasons. One of which being 38 year old Fernando Rodney who may have set Mariners records last season but has been struggling this year along with the majority of his teammates. Rodney was designated for assignment of Sunday ended up getting dealt to the Chicago Cubs for cash. This reconnected the closer with his former manager Joe Maddon who was excited to have him back in bullpen. Rodney picked up 48 saves last season, but is only 16-22 in save opportunities this year, posting a 5-5 record and 5.68 ERA. The Cubs hope Rodney can display his Shoot the Arrow move many times in a Cubs uniform as they look to clinch their playoff spots over the Giants.
The NL East leading New York Mets also picked up a reliever, adding 28 year old Addison Reed pending a physical. The Diamondbacks receive two prospects in return, as they let go of their former closer who lost his job earlier in the season. Like Rodney, Reed has had an off season averaging only 7.52 K/9 and 3.10 BB/9. Through his career, Reed has always averaged more than a strikeout per innings and no more than 3.0 BB/9. The bonus to Reed is that he is arbitration eligible for the next two seasons. Reed has been in the minors for a good majority of the season, but since he returned in late July he has posted a 1.65 ERA. Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia currently play the 8th and 9th inning roles for the Mets and Reed will most likely fit in well in the 7th inning. The Mets lead the division over the Nationals by 5.5 games and with the recent return of David Wright, they look hard to catch.

Utley & Byrd, Dodgers vs. Giants. NL West Fiering Up

The Giants and Dodgers both made deals with non-contending teams in their efforts to take home the NL West. Starting with more positive news, the San Francisco Giants picked up 37 year old outfielder Marlon Byrd from the Reds on Thursday in exchange for Double-A RHP Stephen Johnson. Byrd came into his SF debut batting .237 with 19 homeruns. Byrd turns 38 on August 30th, but was a necessary pick up for the Giants with Hunter Pence joining the DL with his oblique strain. Injuries have been beating up the Giants, especially in the outfield as Nori Aoki today comes off the DL while Angel Pagan is still out. Byrd made his appearance today with the Giants at PNC Park against the Wild-Card leading Pirates. Like Tulowitzki with Toronto, Byrd sent the ball over the wall in his first at bat with his new team. But Byrd wasn't done there, as he also singled and doubled finishing the day 3-5 with two RBI's. The Giants went on to take the game 6-4, as Madison Bumgarner got his 15th win and helped himself out with his 5th homerun of the season in the second inning. After getting shutout 4-0 yesterday, Byrd joined the Giants lineup and provided some good offense to help boost them over their opponent today and gain a game on the Dodgers in the NL West standings.
Chase Utley made his debut with the Dodgers at Minute Maid Park down in Houston, but unfortunately for Los Angeles he did not contribute offensively like Byrd. The Dodgers picked up Utley and cash for a couple minor leaguers, but picked him up to keep him away from the Giants. Utley should still fit in well with Howie Kendrick currently out on the DL. Chase Utley is 36 and currently hitting .217, but has been hotter since returning from his ankle injury not to long ago. Chase Utley grew up in Long Beach California as a Dodger fan and was originally drafted by the Dodgers before turning them down for UCLA. Utley joins his former teammate Jimmy Rollins in the middle of the infield as the Dodgers look to hold on to their NL West lead.
Going back to Utley's debut in Houston, Mike Fiers started the game for the Astros against the Dodgers and pulled off a no-hitter, the 11th in Astros franchise history and the 5th in baseball this season. Mike Fiers, who the Astros acquired from the Brewers earlier in the season, struck out 10 and walked three on 134 pitches. Chase Utley was his second to last out, as Utley flew out to Marisnick and went 0-4 in his Dodgers debut, batting second behind Jimmy Rollins. Fiers completed his no-hitter by striking out Turner. The Astros got the win, expanding their lead in the division, while the Giants picked up a game and now only trail the Dodgers by 1.5 games. Congrats to Mike Fiers and the Astros, as they are looking down at the Angels while they battle with the Mariners.

Late Deals

The Cleveland Indians sent big name, or should I say expensive name players Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn to the Atlanta Braves for infielder Chris Johnson. The Indians also sent cash considerations to the Braves to help cover the contracts of those disappointing players, Bourne hitting .246 with only 13 stolen bases and Swisher batting .198 with only eight RBIs. Like Bourn and Swisher, after signing a good size contract Chris Johnson has also had an off year batting .235 with 11 RBIs. 32 year-old Michael Bourn is a former All-Star member of the Atlanta Braves, as he is making $13.5 million this season and is owed another $14 million before his option year of $12 million in 2017. Swisher is another former All-Star, the 34 year-old is making $15 million both this season and the next before his $14 million option season. Both Bourn and Swisher were big pieces to the Indians success on making the playoffs in 2013, but due to injury and lack of production Cleveland has decided to part ways looking to open up salary cap space. 30 year-old Chris Johnson signed a big deal after his 2013 season, batting .321 but lost his starter position over this season. He is still owed $6.5 million for this season, $7 million for next year, $9 million for the 2017 season including a $10 million option in 2018 with $1 million buyout. In reality, these are two teams that had bad seasons just tossing a few of their biggest frustrations to each other. I believe the Indians got the better deal out of this, though Johnson is signed longer, he does not cost nearly as much and is younger with better potential for a turn around year. Swisher did have surgery on his knees, so he may produce better numbers now that he claims to be getting his feeling back, but both him and I am sure welcomed back Bourn will need to be affective if they want to have any success next season.
Like Atlanta, the Texas Rangers acquired a former player from the Boston Red Sox. Mike Napoli cleared waivers and then was dealt to Texas for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Napoli has been a big power bat since becoming a normal starter in 2009, as he spent two seasons with the Rangers totaling 56 homeruns. Napoli was also a big factor in the Red Sox World Series victory in 2013, the 33 year-old catcher/first baseman is coming to the end of his $32 million deal that he signed with the Red Sox when he decided to depart with the Rangers. Due to toe, finger, back, and knee issues, Napoli has had a hard time over the last two seasons and his numbers have shown for it as he is currently hitting .207. Texas is 54-54 but only 3 1/2 games back from a playoff spot, as they look to Napoli as the right handed power bat they are missing. Now back in playoff potential, we will see if Napoli can use the momentum to step up his game up while Boston will likely look to depart with many more pieces to their off season.

The Deadline Has Past

The trade deadline has past and if you ask me this seasons final day was a bit of a dud. Don't get me wrong there were plenty of trades that went down, but the only deal that was entertaining and made me want to learn everything about the deal was the Mets & Tigers trade that sent Cespedes to New York. Thirteen minutes before the deadline the Tigers agreed to part with their strong arm power hitting left fielder receiving minor league right handers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa. Cespedes is hitting .293 on the season with 18 big flies, the Mets have the pitching they need, they were just in need of more offense to support those arms. After tonights walk off blast by Flores, who was apparently traded a couple days ago, the Mets now sit two games behind the Nationals in the NL East and 3.5 games behind the Giants for the second wildcard seat.
The Blue Jays got busy yet again picking up Ben Revere and cash from the Phillies for two RHPs Jimmy Cordero and Alberto Tirado. With all the power the Blue Jays have, they needed to add some speed to the lineup to get on in front of their gap hitters. Revere is known for his consistency and base stealing along with great defense, multiple teams were in the hunt but the Blue Jays showed they are all in this year.  Another similar bat, Gerardo Parra was sent to Baltimore for RHP Zach Davies. Like the Blue Jays they needed a more consistent bat to place in front of Adam Jones and Manny Machado in the lineup. Parra should be the answer tot hem putting in a good fight for the playoffs with his great defense and good on base percentage. The Orioles and Blue Jays both sit six games behind the Yankees and one game the second wildcard seat. The Orioles also dealt one of their arms to the Cubs, sending Tommy Hunter in exchange for outfielders Junior Lake. This trade should help both teams with their needs as they look to catch up to a wildcard spot.
The Cubs picked up another pitcher from the Marlins, Dan Haren who has been in a bit of a slump with the lack of offense to support him. The Cubs picked up Haren and cash for pitcher Ivan Pineyro and shortstop Elliot Soto. The 34 year old pitcher has a 7-7 record coming off the 1-0 loss against Washington. Haren has a 3.42 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, as he joins the 8th team of his career. Haren should join Lester and Arrieta as a difference maker on the mound while the Cubs only trail the Giants by one game. The Marlins also traded pitcher Sam Dyson to the Rangers in exchange for two minor leaguers. With Stanton out, the Marlins have tanked and are selling yet again.
Unlike the Padres, the Mariners finally got around to selling other than the Ackley to NYY deal. The Mariners sent reliever Mark Lowe to the Blue Jays in exchange for LHPs Nick Wells, Jacob Brentz, and Rob Rasmussen. Lowe may not be the Kimbrel or Chapman type reliever Toronto was hunting for, but he will still fill in well as a middle reliever. The Mariners also dished away start J.A. Happ to the Pirates for RHP Adrain Sampson, which adds depth to the Pirates rotation as they look to catch the Cardinals or actually get past the wildcard round this time. A few other deals went down, but none that will be very affective to this seasons outcomes. As we now go into the waivers segment of transactions, if the Padres, White Sox, and Rangers don't stay close look for them to try and make deals with their players. All three of them turned out not to be sellers believing they still have a shot this season. I bet each of them falls out of the picture over the next couple weeks making them put some wanted names out there on the wire.

Teams Are Willing to Pay the Price

Plenty of teams see themselves as World Seriers contenders still with multiple deals going down today as we reach the last night before the deadline. First off earlier today the Toronto Blue Jays showed us that Tulowoitzki wasn't going to be their only big acquisition with the addition of ace David Price from the Tigers. Detroit got minor league LHPs Matt Boyd, Jairo Labourt, and the man known for living in a van, Daniel Norris. The Tigers should be really satisfied with the deal, as they now have three arms that could be strong difference makers in their rotation by next season. While the Blue Jays have stacked up and look like a real threat for the wildcard which they are only two games behind after todays victory over Kansas City. The Blue Jays have an incredible amount of power to support their arms, they only need someone such as Chapman or Kimbrel to have a stronger finish to their games. With Price's contract coming to a close at the end of the season, the Jays hope they have him for more than a rental since he is the best arm they have had in their rotation since the days of Roy Halladay. With Donaldson, Martin, Bautista, Encarnacion, and now Tulowitzki providing pop the Blue Jays will be a tough team to keep quiet over the last two months.
The Cardinals put Matt Holliday back on the DL today with his quad injury, so they got busy picking up Brandon Moss from the Indians for minor leaguer Rob Kaminsky. Moss is known for his power, but is not as consistent as Holliday which is why Cleveland was willing to depart with him. Both Moss and Indians admitted he was not living up to expectations. Moss will be a free agent after this season and hopes to have more of an impact to help the Cardinals hold on as they currently lead the NL Central by 5.5 games.
Carlos Gomez was traded again today, but this time it appears to have actually gone through. Two years ago the Astros lost 111 games, but now they are in position to run away with AL West after sweeping the Angels and taking a two game lead in the division. Today they added big bat Carlos Gomez and starter Mike Fiers for four minor leaguers. The Brewers received a top prospect outfielder Domingo Santana, along with Adrian Houser, Josh Hader, and Brett Phillips. Gomez is having a bit of a down 2015 season, but will fill in fine especially in the absence of Springer. Look for the Astros to continue shopping, possibly for another starter such as Tyson Ross or maybe his teammate Craig Kimbrel to close games out. The battle between the Angels and Astros should get intense, as Trout returned to play today but Houston still came out on top with the Jason Castro walk off blast. I guess batting practice with JJ Watt did not pay off for the Angels.
Another pitching deal went down today with the Giants adding Mike Leake to the rotation, giving up minor leaguers Adam Duvall and Keury Mella to the Reds. The Giants struck out in their attempts for Hamels and Price so they stepped down from elite starters and made their deal with Cincinnati. Leake is a rental with his contract ending after this season, but he will be filling in for Tim Hudson who is 6-8 with a 4.80 ERA and has not made it to seven innings since June 3rd. Hudson took home his first title last season and announced his retirement after this season, but he says even if his status is affected he is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team excel. Leake has been hot recently and has a 9-5 record on the season. The Giants sit a half game behind the Dodgers in their NL West fight.
The Pirates added Joakim Soria today giving up minor leaguer JaCoby Jones. Soria has 23 saves on the year, with a 2.85 ERA but he will be taking a setup role with the Pirates getting things ready for Mark Melacon. The Pirates bullpen will now be stronger, as closing games out has been one of their few weaknesses. The Yankees and Mariners made a deal sending two minor leaguers in exchange for utility man Dustin Ackley, but that was not the big news for New York on the day. Michael Pineda was scheduled to make the start today, but he now has been placed on the DL with a forearm strain which could turn out to be a much bigger deal. Sabbathia made the start instead, but he did not have a very good day on the mound and ended up in the hospital due to dehydration. The Yankees have a lead in the AL East they hope the newly built Jays wont be able to recover from. The big three team deal between the Dodgers, Braves, and Marlins was confirmed today sending six players to LA, two of which they have already designated for assignment. The Dodgers are using their resources, or money to get what they want.
Brandon Phillips had a great day at the plate in the Reds 15-5 win over the Pirates today. Phillips launched two long balls, as he went 4-5 with 7 RBIs and two stolen bases, which are numbers no one has been able to put together since the 1920s. The Padres also had an amazing comeback, as Norris stood at the plate in the top of the ninth down 7-5 with two outs when a rain delay was called. After the delay, Familia took the mound again but surrender an 0-2 count single to Norris, who went 5-5 with a grandslam, then a single to Kemp and a three run shot to Justin Upton to give the Padres the 8-7 lead and after another delay the win. Look for those Padres to get busy tomorrow with Kimbrel, Ross, Upton, Venable, Shields, and Kennedy all up for grabs.

Hamels On the Way Out, Flores No Need to Pout

It was a very interesting night, as two trades got called off and the man we've been waiting for, Cole Hamels finally got traded. Starting with the Hamels deal, the Texas Rangers landed the ace from the Philadelphia Phillies in a big blockbuster deal that also got them left handed reliever Jake Diekman. In return, the Phillies stacked up on prospects bringing in top catching prospect Jorge Alfaro, outfielder Nick Williams, and right handed arms Alec Asher, Jake Thompson, and Jerad Eickhoff. The Phillies also picked up one big leaguer, Matt Harrison who is still under an expensive contract based off his 2012 performance. The Rangers are most likely looking at this deal as a run for next season, as Hamels will still be under contract. Having a Darvish Hamels punch in the rotation will be tough to beat with Fielder and Hamilton supporting them offensively. The Rangers do still have a shot to make the post season this year, but have a lot of teams to overcome in order to grab that second wildcard seat. Many other teams were in the hunt for Hamels, including the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Yankees, Giants, Cubs, Astros, and Red Sox, but the Rangers pulled out the best offer to satisfy Philadelphia.  I believe this to be a great move by the Rangers, as they need to pounce on opportunities like such since in the offseason most free agents don't have much of a desire to head down to Texas and play in a hitters ball park. Hamels finished his run with the Phillies with his no-hitter and will be remembered fondly in Philadelphia.
So I went over the Dodgers and Marlins deal sending Latos and Morse to LA, well that has been called off. Shortly after that trade was apparently finished, the Detroit Tigers made everyone aware that they are willing to move David Price. Going off that, I thought the Dodgers pulled out of the deal wanting to use their prospects to acquire Price and make sure the team only a half game behind them can't get him. Word then came out that it was a medical issue with one of the minor leaguers that broke up the trade. Recent information from Bleacher Report say the deal may still happen, but including another team. It appears the Atlanta Braves may be involved and are sending closer Jim Johnson and starter Alex Wood to the Dodgers as well. The only name I could find that the Dodgers are giving up is their recent Cuban signing Hector Olivera somewhere in the deal. The Dodgers are using their money and are suppose to pick up six players, while sending two to the Braves and three to the Marlins. The draft pick that was in the original deal going to the Dodgers is also now suppose to end up with the Braves. None of this is official yet, but before the deadline arrives a deal like such between these teams is expected.
The other big deal was Carlos Gomez supposed to go to the Mets. Word was this deal between the Brewers and Mets was completed sending Gomez to New York for starter Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores. It was all over social media as Flores heard about the trade and teared up while standing out at shortstop. To his relief the deal was called off by the Mets in their concern of medical issues over Carlos Gomez's hip. Gomez has been injured on the past and the Mets were no longer interested in giving up an ace of the future, though Wheeler is on the DL right now, along with Flores who they signed when he was 16. Word now is that there will be no deal, but I wouldn't be surprised if conversations continue and if the Mets get a little more out of it, the deal may be back on.
In other news, Troy Tulowitzki made his appearance with his new Blue Jays franchise today going 3-5 blasting a towering homer and making some nice plays at short. Robinson Cano is out with an abdominal strain while Matt Holliday reinjures his quad with an apparent strain. The Cardinals injury may trigger them to look to Cespedes or another power outfielder who has been made available. Then after acquiring Cueto, the Royals have turned and sent starter veteran Joe Blanton to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations while Drew Storen is very displeased with losing the closer spot to Papelbon in Washington and looks to talk to his agent about getting sent to a team were he can reclaim that role.

Dodgers Finally Getting Busy

The Dodgers made a deal today picking up Mat Latos and Mike Morse from the Miami Marlins in exchange for three minor league pitchers. I thought the Dodgers would have had a lot more done by now as they finally pick up a pitcher to add behind Kershaw and Greinke. The Dodgers will be swallowing the rest of both players contracts as Latos is owed $9.5 million and will be a free agent come 2016, while Morse is on the first year of a two year deal that is worth $16 million. Latos was off his game in the beginning of the season, but has been hot since coming off the DL posting a 2.96 ERA since June and a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts. Morse is hitting .214 with four big flies in his 52 games this season. Dodgers also picked up a pick in next years draft, number 34 overall. Don't expect the Dodgers to be done, as I would not be surprised if they acquired two more well known arms by the deadline to fill in for McCarthy, Anderson, and Beachy who have not necessarily lived up to what the Dodgers are expecting.
Another note in the NL West is Giants third base replacement Matt Duffy and how he surprisingly made himself a possible contender for NL Rookie of the Year. Joc Pederson and Kris Bryant are the expected players to be fighting for that award, as the hype surrounded them especially with their starts to the season, but Matt Duffy leads rookies in wins above replacement (WAR) with 3.4. Pederson currently sits with a WAR of 2.4, while Bryant sits at 2.6. Duffy is hitting .304 with nine homers and 46 RBIs. He currently bats third in the Giants lineup and may sneak his way into that award if he keeps things up. Matt Vasgersian said on KNBRs Murph and Mac show that it was the Giants best move in 20 years to not sign Sandoval since they have ended up with Duffy. His teammate Chris Heston has also made a case, sitting with a 11-5 record and 3.14 ERA along with a no-hitter. The youngsters are making a difference in SF and are a big reason the Giants only trail the Dodgers by half a game.

Angels Stocking Up On Outfielders

The day after picking up Shane Victorino, the Angels went back at it acquiring lefties David Murphy from Cleveland and David DeJesus from Tampa Bay. The Angels only surrender 2 low level minor leaguers in the deals. The three new Angel outfielders will be splitting the leftfield role in the absence of Matt Joyce who is out with a concussion after colliding with teammate Eric Aybar and Collin Cowgill who has been out for a couple months due to his wrist. Joyce has had an off year however, batting .178 with only 21 RBIs. Daivd Murphy looks to be a good fill in, as he is hitting .296 on the season. Realistically, all these players are actually filling in for Josh Hamilton after the Angels got rid of him with no real plan of who to follow him up with.   The Angles are tied with the Astros atop the AL West after tonights loss.
Speaking of the AL West, the A's continued their selling and Royals continue buying, as Ben Zobrist is now on his way to Kansas City. Zobrist had been among talk for a good while, mostly about going to the New York Mets however. This trade shows that the Royals are all in after picking up their ace in Cueto yesterday and now the man to fill in for Alex Gordon out in left. I honestly thought the Royals gave away a bit to much of their future in this trade, as they gave up pitching prospects Aaron Brooks and Sean Manaea who have both proven to have a bright future. The Royals also got 2 million from the A's in the deal. The Royals are looking down among the rest of the AL and will these additions have set themselves up nicely to continue doing so.
The Washington Nationals made a deal today picking up All-Star Johnathan Papelbon from the Phillies for minor pitcher Nick Pivetta. Papelbon waived his no-trade clause after he was given reassurance that he would take Drew Storen's job and become the Nationals closer. Papelbon is the saves leader in both the Phillies and Red Sox franchises and now has a good chance to do the same in Washington. He goes from last to first place in his division and must be excited for a chance to take a run in the playoffs.
In other news, Mookie Betts is looking to be out with concussion issues after making a great grab and tumbling over the wall before losing the ball in what was after review called a homerun for Jose Abreu. The Red Sox have had no luck, as they look at another big name player hitting the DL. While the Yankees had a crazy day, surrendering five runs in the first inning only to comeback with 21 in their victory over the Rangers today. Mike Trout looks to be ok after MRI tests on his wrist came out to be negative, while Mejia has been busted again for PEDs  and is looking at a 162 game ban this time...good thing the Mets just picked up Clippard. Shields, Samardzjia, Price, Ross, plenty of good pitchers still among talk, look for the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Cubs, Giants, Yankees, and others to get busy buying.

Tulo Goes North of the Border

A big deal went down today sending Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays for Jose Reyes and minor leaguers according to Fox Sports report. There has been talk about Tulowitzki getting dealt, but it was always about him going to either New York team. Word was that he wanted to be traded, so I wonder if this is really just partially a move by the Rockies to make him happy. Well either way, in the end neither of these teams got what they truly needed. Both Blue Jays and Rockies have a heavy need for pitching instead of injury liable shortstops. This is most likely just the first piece to a move by the Blue Jays if not both teams. Adding an extra power bat to the lineup, the Blue Jays may look to send off one of their more slumping bats for an arm to add to the rotation. They may even look to dish away the player they just picked up due tot he money issues I had mentioned about the Jays before. If not, things will be difficult for Tulowitzki in his effort to adjust to the turf field, his defensive statistics look like god powers compared Jose Reyes in his time in Toronoto, but look for them to take a bit of a turn in direction.  Troy Tulowitzki is still owed a solid $113.7 million through 2020 and now has a no-trade clause under his contract. Overall, this trade does not make much sense to me, unless they look at it as the first step in adding what they really need....pitching.
Though the Mets did not add Tulowitzki, they did acquire a arm to add to the bullpen form the Oakland A's. The Mets added former rival Nationals closer RHP Tyler Clippard and cash in a deal that sent RHP Casey Meisner. Clippard has 17 saves and 2.79 ERA in his time with the A's this season. The Mets are really doing whatever they can to get into the playoffs this season, as I honestly believe giving up Meisner is a bit much for Clippard due to the fact he has had such an amazing time in A ball getting 10 wins and posting a 2.35 ERA over 18 starts. The Mets have had their issues in deciding who closes out their games, as we have seen plenty of late inning comebacks against them, such as the Nationals and Dodgers in the 9th inning recently.  It could be adding both Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe from the Braves blew the Mets chances of acquiring Tulowitzki, but I bet they are still looking to add some offense over the next couple days.
The Los Angeles Angels add another bat to the team to play along side Mike Trout in left with the addition of Shane Victorino and cash in the deal sending Josh Rutledge to Boston. Victornio has hit the DL six times in his three years with the Red Sox but was a big difference maker in their success of taking home the 2013 World Series. Victornio was claimed by ESPN to have tears of joy, as he leaves his bottom of east team and joins a team on top of their division in the west. Rutledge is also in good fortune, as he is going from Triple A Utah to the starting lineup playing in place of the injured Pedroia. The Angels hope Victornio can use the magic he displayed in the playoffs for both the Phillies and Red Sox to help them bring home the ultimate prize. The Red Sox have shown they are selling and may trade another name or two, such as Napoli for starters.

Cueto to Kansas City

The Royals have acquired an ace and now look to continue dominating the American League. The slumping Reds have been among talk of teams ready to deal some of their big name players and as I stated the other day, the Royals are the team that should be talking to them. Kansas City picks up ace Johnny Cueto to take the lead role in the rotation, as the Royals now look to increase their current 7.5 game lead in AL Central. In the return the 43-53 Reds pick up minor league arms LHP Brandon Finnegan, LHP John Lamb, and LHP Cody Reed. Finnegan is the only one with Major League experience, as he appeared in the playoffs last season during the Royals run towards the World Series. The story of Cueto discovery of the trade is actually quite funny, as he was told by a fellow teammate to stop warming up Saturday due to being traded. The Reds turned out to unsatisfied with the current deal with a good amount of question in place about one of the potential players, so Cueto got his start in. Johnny ended having a great day on the mound pitching eight scoreless innings in the 5-2 win over the Rockies, only encouraging the Royals to make Cincinnati happy and get the deal done today. Cueto  is 29, coming off a 20 win season last year, currently posting a 7-6 record with a 2.62 ERA so far this year. The Reds will look for good use of the three players they received in return, look for Finnegan to be a difference maker in the upcoming seasons. The Royals may still be looking for a bat to fill in the shoes of the injured Alex Gordon, as for the Reds, pitchers Mike Leake and Arolidis Chapman are still among trade talk as the deadline approaches. I think the Cueto deal will get things underway, as the Rangers and Dodgers look to be leaders for Cole Hamels from Philly, while David Price, Jeff Samardzija, Yovani Gallardo are a few other big names out there in the rumors. Expect the Yankees, Cubs, and Dodgers to be the leading teams trying to acquire these names.

Cole Hamels No-No

Though there has been so much trade talk, Cole Hamels showed everyone that he wasn't distracted out on the mound today. Hamels proved to all the playoff potential teams that he is worth the prospects pitching a no-hitter today at Wrigley quieting down the powerfully offensive Cubs.  It was the third no-hitter of the season, following the Giants Chris Heston and Nationals Max Scherzer. Hamels came away with the 5-0 victory posting 13 strikeouts, his highest total since the 2010 season against the Marlins. On the last out, things look like they got close as Kris Bryant flew out to deep center where Odubel Herrera ran back and then had to recover leaping forward to make the catch and finish off the no-hitter. It was a little extra and probably unnecessary drama to make the completion of the no-hitter even more exciting. Hamels finished with 129 pitches, second most in his career, reaching 94mph and mixing up his pitches to keep the Cubs off balance and late throughout a majority of the day. Carlos Ruiz joins Jason Varetik as the only player to catch four no-hitters in a career. Though it was most likely Cole Hamels last appearance in a Philadelphia Phillies jersey this season, they definitely got his best effort. Hamels has admitted that he sees himself wearing different colors this season, as the Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Astros, Giants, and Rangers are teams looking to add him to their roster.

Trade Deadline Predictions

Now that trades are finally underway, things should get entertaining and very interesting. Pitching is a big need for many teams. The Royals, Cubs, and Yankees could use starters while the Cardinals, Mets, and Pirates need relievers as the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Astros could use both. I expect Cole Hamels, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, and David Price to the top targets for contenders. We'll start in the AL East.
The Toronto Blue Jays have offense, coming off their series in Oakland where Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, Russel Martin, and Edwin Encarnacion all showed off their power, some more than once. What the Blue Jays are missing is a dominant starter and some real strength in the bullpen. Look for them to target pitchers like Cueto and Hamels, but cost and no trade clauses will become a factor. I think they will have better luck acquiring a top closer such as Jonathan Papelbon from the bottom of the league Phillies. If the Blue Jays were able to pick up a starter, look for them to have a conversation with the Marlins for Dan Haren or Matt Latos. Those starters wont be so much of a cost problem and will be easier to resign.  The Blue Jays are currently sitting 5.5 games behind the Yankees and will need their offense to stay strong and healthy along with help out on the mound.
The Chicago Cubs are having their first successful season in a good while and though they sit in third in their division behind the top two records in the NL, the playoffs are not out of their reach as they currently lead the Giants by a half game for the second wildcard seat. With Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo leading the offense, the Cubs can afford to send a bat off in a deal. With Addison Russell added to the team last season, Starlin Castro is a hot commodity for other teams. The San Diego Padres recently announced they will be selling, so look to the Cubs to try to acquire James Shields or Tyson Ross to strengthen their rotation. The Cubs will also be looking to Detroit and their ace David Price. I am not sure if the Tigers are fully ready to part with Price, but if they decide to sell, as they currently are looking up in standings at the Twins and Royals, Price would be one of the big names they send off at the deadline.
The reigning AL champs recently lost their big name left fielder Alex Gordon, but they are in the market for pitching as well. The Cincinnati Reds have had an off season, so I expect those two teams to be chatting. Johnny Cueto and Marlon Byrd are the answer to the Royals issues and would help them lock up the AL Central they currently lead by 6.5 games. The Royals currently have the best record in the AL as they look to get another shot at the World Series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have had plenty of amazing pitching recently from Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw, but they only lead their division by three games over the San Francisco Giants who they have not had much luck against this season. The Dodgers will be agressive and go after Samardzija, Price, Cueto, and really any other starter they can get their hands on. They will get at least one big name guy to slide into the number three spot in the rotation. However, the Dodgers real problem has been their bullpen. Though they have added former closers such as Chris Perez and JP Howell in recent years, they have not had much success with them on the mound. So the Dodgers will be targeting high heater Arolidis Chapman. The Dodgers have won the NL West the last two seasons, but have always been eliminated in the playoffs due to a poor bullpen. Look to the Dodgers to do everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen again.
The New York Mets currently sit three games behind the injured Nationals with one obvious problem, they need more help on offense. With David Wright still out they have had a hard time putting runs together besides when they use the longball, which isn't easy at Citi Field. Look for the Mets to dish one of their many young talented starters for a big bat. They look to pick up Ben Zobrist from the Oakland A's, but I expect them to do more in their effort to prove they are not a fluke. Maybe a deal with the Padres for Justin Upton, or with the Red Sox for Hanley Ramirez, or even grab Tulowitzki from the Rockies. Their bullpen isn't fully set, but a bat is the first thing on their list. I expect them to be very busy over the next couple days.
The Minnesota Twins have been a pleasant surprise this season, as they sit second in the AL Central and currently hold a wildcard seat. Look to the Twins to try and beef up the lineup with the addition of an outfielder. My guess would be Carlos Gomez from Milwaukee or Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers. With some more power added on with Dozier, Hunter, and Mauer, look for the Twins to hold on and become a strong threat.
Adam Jones has stated his unhappiness with the offensive production from his team. Questions were risen about the Orioles plans to either buy or sell come the trade deadline, but they look to add on and make a run for the playoffs though they currently sit fourth in their division. Like the Twins, the Orioles need an outfielder, Gomez and Cespedes could be on their watch as well, but I expect them to look at Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies. A lead off batter with some pop could help them try to catch up to the Yankees at top the AL East.

MLB Trade Deadline Approaches

We are eight days away from July 31st and the MLB trade deadline. Things have been on the slow side going through the All-Star break, but things got underway today as the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics made a deal sending left handed starter Scott Kazmir to his hometown and the contending Astros. Kazmir has had an impressive season, posting a 2.38 ERA and holding a 5-5 record through 18 starts. The A's received two minor leaguers in return including catcher Jacob Nottingham, who is the top catching prospect within the Astros organization, along with right handed prospect Daniel Mengden. Kazmir joins an Astros team currently two games behind the hot Los Angeles Angels looking to reclaim the top seed of the AL West. The Astros have been struggling with slugger George Springer out on the DL, but have added a key need to clinching a spot within the playoffs for the first time since their defeat in the World Series in 2005. Only time will tell whether or not this potential rental was worth the prospects. Kazmir could be the first of many from an expected fire sale within the A's organization, as they currently reside at the bottom of the division.
Today the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers also got down to business sending veteran Aramis Ramirez to his original team in exchange for Pirates minor league right hander Yhonathan Barrios. Ramirez is 38 years old heading and into the final year on his contract. Pittsburgh is swallowing $3MM of the remaining $5.74MM on his unpaid salary. Things did not look to be going Ramirez's way early in the season, but he has turned things around through the month of July posting a .352 average. The Pirates were in a big need of an infielder after losing both Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison for a good amount of time to the DL. Ramirez will take over at 3rd base or platoon with Pedro Alvarez, who the Pirates now look to deal over at 1st. Ramirez has spent his entire 18 year career in the NL Central, starting with Pittsburgh before getting traded to the Cubs during the 2003 season and signing with the Brewers going into the 2012 season. He already announced this will likely be his final season and is excited to now have a good chance to make the playoffs at the end of his career, as the Pirates are three games up holding the first wildcard seat.

9/12/14 Stanton's Future??
Not many things are more unpleasant to watch then seeing a player hit the ground and lay in pain not able to get back up. Buster Posey showed us that in 2011 as he was taken out and laid next to home plate grinding his teeth in pain. Well yesterday Marlins big slugger Giancarlo Stanton took a pitch to the face from Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers. The pitch rose up and in, and instead of turning away or falling down to dodge it, Stanton took a check swing and got hit on the left side of his face. Stanton fell to the ground immediately and was reported bleeding mostly from the mouth. Trainers rushed out onto the field, getting there within nine seconds and immediately calling for a cart. Stanton laid on the ground as
if shot by a bullet until hauled away and taken to the hospital. There was so much blood left in the batters box the field crew had to come out before play could be resumed. Stanton has a big laceration that will require stitches and will most likely cause swelling, but that is no where near the top of the worries. Braves Heyward took the ball to the face, but recovered in time and now bats with a helmet that covers the area he took the pitch. Stanton however is reported to have multiple facial fractures and dental damage. What Stanton needs to worry about is impact to his orbital bone leading to permanent damage to his vision. Luckily the pitch his face an inch or two below the eye. Stanton is coming out of this rather lucky, as it appears he will not need any surgery and should be able to go back to Miami next week. His season is most likely over, as the team will not want to risk anything, plus it will take much more than a week for him to fully recover. The Marlins have 17 games left, though they are still fighting for the playoffs, Stanton will probably not be apart of their fight anymore in 2014. Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers send out a sincere apology to Stanton, and you can tell by his reaction feels terrible about the incident.
Another big name now missing from the lineup is Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles. Davis is not in as bad of a situation as Stanton, but he is suspended for usage of amphetamines for 25 games. The Orioles lead their division by 10 games with 17 left in the season, so they will be missing their big slugger into the playoffs. The question is if they can survive 8 games without him. Though Davis is hitting only .196, he ranks second on the team behind Nelson Cruz with 26 HRs and is in third in RBIs behind Jones and Cruz. With Machado out for the season, the Orioles are turning to a lot of backups now to support them in the playoffs against possibly the Tigers, Royals, Angels etc. Missing Davis in the playoffs will result in a clutch bat that can produce runs through power. The Orioles will struggle especially since then have not been to hot recently. Davis issued an apology to his team, but if luck
takes their side or if other bats likes Hardy can step it up, a team missing Weiters, Machado, and now Davis can push their ay through to the AL Championship where Davis would most likely be able to rejoin them in their fight for the World Series.

9/2/14 Last Minute Transactions
Well we have reached September, the last month of the regular season is underway and the battles
intensify as there a bunch of division match ups left on the schedule and the playoff picture is still wide open. But right there in the end August, we had a few deals made before it was to late. First off, the Athletics beat out the Giants and Dodgers and picked up Adam Dunn from the White Sox for minor leaguer Nolan Sanburn.  The big slugger let his presence be felt in game one, as on his first at bat he jacked it over the right field wall for a two run shot. Athletics fans went crazy welcoming their new player. Though he already announced this to be his final season, Dunn is not far off of reaching 500 HRs.  So I do hope he changes his mind and stays in the bay area.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost yet again tonight, making it seven straight as they have fallen behind the Cardinals at the wrong time in the division, currently trailing by two games. The main problem they have been having is their bullpen. So they made an acquisition picking up Jonathan Broxton from the Reds for two players to be named. The former closer has been doing his job in Cincinnati and the Brewers look to him to shut the door and hold their lead, unlike what they have been seeing from their relievers recently. Broxton should help them in a time of need as they look to get back on top in the NL Central.
The busy team has been the Orioles. Baltimore currently holds a 9.5 game lead over the Yankees in the
AL East, but they were thinking of more than winning the division as they reached out to a couple teams. First they made a deal with the division rival Red Sox. The Orioles picked up utility player Kelly Johnson, who seems to have been on every team from that division at least once now, along with third baseman Michael Almanzar. With Machado out for the season, the Orioles picked up support to back him up. In return the Red Sox picked up another former Athletic Jemile Weeks along with Ivan De Jesus Jr. The Orioles also made a deal with the other Soxs from Chicago, picking up outfielder Alejandro De Aza. That will give them some good consistency and a bit more pop in their lineup. I like how the Orioles have stepped up this year, currently sitting with 80 wins, only behind the Angels overall.
The Phillies were impressive, as they combined for a four pitcher no-hitter against the Braves. Cole Hamels opened up the day and pitched six innings. Jake Diekman, Ken Giles, and Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a no hit inning to complete the no hit game. Hamels did surrender five walks, which is why it was not a perfect game. But as a team, the Phillies completed the fourth no-hitter of the season and first by multiple pitchers in two years. Keep your eye on the AL and NL Central along with the NL West, as those divisions are tight only separated by two games if not less.

8/28/14
Yusmeiro Petit set a new MLB record today in San Francisco, as he retired the 46th straight batter he faced over a span of eight games, six of them being from out of the bullpen. Today Petit retired the first eight Colorado Rockies that stepped up to the plate to break Mark Buehrle's record of 45 set in 2009. Charlie Culberson was the last better Petit needed to break the record and he did exactly what his home fans were hoping for as he set Culberson down on strikes. Of course the Rockies pitcher Lyles ended Petit's streak with a double in the very next at bat, but that is just baseball for you.  Petit got the win in todays game, as the Giants took it 4-1 over Colorado and the Giants have some decision making to do if they should keep Petit in the rotation after his great start, as he was filling in for the slumping Tim Lincecum today. Congratulations to Petit, as his win today helps the Giants hold the 2nd wildcard seat.
Further NL West news, Scott Van Slyke of the Los Angeles Dodgers came of the game in Arizona last night with an ankle sprain. While moving across the outfield Van Slyke took a bad step that resulted to his injury. He is not expected to miss much time if any, but the Dodgers can thank him and his hot bat for their increasing lead in the division. On a bit of a funny note, Van Slyke blames the grass at Chase Field for his injury.
In transaction news, there have been a lot of claims on waivers that have resulted in no deals found. It may just be me, but I am used to teams finding deals a majority of the time. Justin Mornuea was claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers, but they were unable to make a deal with the Rockies. In another example, the Athletics claimed Yunel Escobar from the Rays, but again no deal was made. These playoff potential teams are all looking for players to add to give them bench depth, fill in for injuries, or be that starter at a certain position they have been needing. Lots of players have been clearing waivers as well. The A's, though I don't think they really needed him, made a deal with the Rangers and acquired Geovany Soto to add their fourth catcher to the roster. A more impactive trade, the Angels picked up Gordon Beckham from the White Sox for a player to be named later. The second base position has been one the Angels have needed a bit of help in. Beckham on the Angel roster now gives them a bat that can provide clutch extra base hits, including the homerun he hit just yesterday against Miami.
Players who were claimed today are Jason Nix by the Royals and Nolan Reimold by the Diamondbacks. Another noticeable signing is outfielder Chris Young, as the Yankees signed him to a minor league deal. Young showed his great bat in his days with Arizona, but since his time with the Mets he has had a harder time showing any consistency batting .205 this season. Young should make a good addition to the injury plagued Yankees in an outfield where he will join starters Ellsbury and Gardner, along with Beltran, Ichiro, and Prado in right field.
None of the division battles are over, as things are staying intense in the AL West and NL Central, while the Wildcard fights look to go until the last day of the season.

8/23/14  Big Signing in Boston
Rusney Castillo has arrived in Boston, the Cuban center fielder agreed to a seven year 72.5 million dollar deal. The Red Sox look to him to be their future big bat in the outfield with the fellow Cuban bat Cespedes. Boston has been on a slump as of late, dropping seven straight. After their pitching sale before the deadline, Boston has made their offense look better but are having a hard time out there on the mound. Castillo will join a group of successful players coming out of Cuba, as Puig, Cespedes, Abreu, and Fernandez have all made names for themselves.  Boston was in a battle with the Tigers when it came to making a deal with Castillo, but came on top in the end with the length they offered. Though the Red Sox look to be fully out of the picture this season, after an off season where they acquire some new arms, Boston will be dangerous with Castillo in their lineup.
The Angels and A's have gotten intense in their division fight as the A's tied it up tonight in their 2-1 victory with Lester on the mound. The Angels picked up Gordon Beckham from the White Sox, for what seemed like nothing, but also have bad news with the loss of their leading pitcher Garret Richards for the rest of the season. Though I believe trading Cespedes was not a very good move, I will now say the A's will take the West now that the Angels are missing both Skaggs and Richards from the rotation.
In other baseball injury news, Manny Machado is back on the DL and this time for the season with knee surgery. Last year, Manny's season ended with a left knee injury, this year it is the right knee. He took a swing that messed up his knee and resulted in Machado's need for assistance off the field. This season is a bit of a different story, as the Orioles are currently leading their division by seven games. The Orioles should be able to hang on as all their division rivals are in slumps. The Blue Jays especially have been tripping, along with the Yankees who have been running to injury issues as well with Beltran recently missing games.
A current big story in the AL however is the slumping Tigers. They surrendered 12 runs against the Twins today and 20 yesterday. While the Royals have been hot with Gordon, Butler, and Perez showing off their bats and other bats coming to life such as Moustakas and Cain. The Royals currently have a 3 game lead, as they are looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 1985. With the slumping Tigers and Indians, the Royals look to be in good shape to runaway with the Central division making it A's, Royals, and Orioles as the division winners. I doubt anyone called that in the beginning of the year. Wildcard spot #1 will go to the Angels, while the Mariners and Tigers will fight for the 2nd seat.

8/14/14   RISING ROYALS
Starting with a quick note....today Rob Manfred was elected the new commissioner of MLB to follow up Selig.  The current chief operating officer has got some big shoes to fill and will be facing a lot of pressure on his performance as fans look for baseball to continue being Americas Pastime.
The big story today in baseball has got to be those Kansas City Royals. Now we came into this season with me stating that if they are going to end their playoff slump, it had to be this season and they are showing us right now that they got what it takes. After their win today over the best record team in baseball, the Athletics, the Royals hold a 0.5 game lead in the AL Central over the thought to be dominant Detroit Tigers.  The Royals recently added Josh Willingham to the roster, which i thought was funny because Willingham had just finished a 3 games series in Oakland, and here are the A's coming into Kansas City for him to face again. But even with Hosmer currently out, the Royals are getting their success from bats such as Gordon, Perez, Butler, and Infante. Though the Royals are not hitting many long balls, they are hitting for average and have been clutch with men on base as they have won 18 of their last 22 games.  Their pitching has looked amazing as well, especially Jason Vargas and his 3 hit shutout of the A's retiring the last 23 batters in his complete game.  Not many put much hope in the Royals making any impact in the AL Central this season, especially with Detroit and Cleveland in the division, both team who made the playoffs last year.  The Royals have the longest drought in baseball when it comes to making the postseason, as their last appearance was in 1985. Eight years more than the runner up the Toronto Blue Jays. With the strong performance on the mound from starters such as Shields, and consistent hitting from bats like Gordon and Perez, the Royals look to give the Tigers a good run for their money for that division spot. With Detroit suffering some issues with Verlander and Sanchez, the Royals have heated up at the right time. When the Tigers picked up Price, things were thought to be over the Royals, but they have made their pickups as well. Though they may have been more quiet, they have acquired needed weapons such as Ibanez and Willingham at the plate and Frasor and Downs on the mound. I wish the Royals luck at taking that central division or at least a wildcard seat.
Injury news, the Reds have lost Bailey to the 15 day DL with a strained elbow. The Reds are trying to stay in the picture for the wildcard, but with continuous injuries it keeps becoming more of a challenge. They hope the pitcher they recently signed longterm is only dealing with minor problems. The A's placed Jed Lowrie on the DL with a fractured finger.  With the middle infield being the only weal link in the A's roster, making a move for Jimmy Rollins is becoming more needed. Troy Tulowitzki will have season ending hip surgery bringing up the question of whether or not he has played his last game for the Colorado Rockies. Tulo has done a lot of complaining about being a part of a team that can't bring in many wins, which has lead to trade talk about the young shortstop.  Tulo signed a huge 10 year deal a couple years ago with the Rockies and there was a lot of rumors near the trade deadline about him going.  But whoever may claim him will need to worry about his injury issues and the many years left on his contract.  Last but not least, Ryu and Darvish both hit the DL with arm issues. With Tanaka out as well, the big imported pitchers are all down not showing the MLB network their magic at the moment. Word is Tanaka has a good chance to return, but their appears to be doubt about the other two through September. Only Ryu looks to be making the playoffs with the current standings.

8/9/14
Waiver Period Predictions
As preseason football begins to grab everyone's attention, it is time to make some final playoff predictions as the trade deadline has passed and players can only be claimed or pass through waivers. We saw some interesting deals take place, with Lester and Cespedes being swapped and Price going to the Tigers in the 3 team trade that got the Rays...well nothing that will help. Its time to go over the current standings...
So in the East the leaders currently are the Orioles and Nationals. Baltimore has a 5 game lead over the Yanks and 6 over the Jays. Though they are missing Weiters, they have been getting great power from Davis, Cruz, and Jones.  The Orioles are riding on their offense to carry them through. With the Blue Jays suffering so much, Lawrie, Encarnacion, and as of yesterday Cabrera. They have lost their lead with to many key guys joining the DL. Expect the Yankees to climb back into the picture however. It will be tight between those two, but I will put my money on the Orioles to hold on as they have more consistency from their younger weapons. The Nationals ay be having all their drama with Harper, but they did a good job at the trade deadline and hold a 3.5 game lead over the Braves at the moment. Atlanta should give them a big battle, but I think the Nats will take the NL East as the Braves bats are to easy to strikeout, even without Uggla.

In the Central, the NL will be very interesting. Brewers are fighting with the Cardinals, Pirates, and the Reds are fully out of the picture. With the Cardinals pitching pickups, I expect them to push the Brewers out of the way and take the division. The Brewers are suffering a few injuries to their rotation that will cost them, though Peralta has done a great job on the mound and Gomez at the plate, the Brewers will have to settle for wildcard. The Pirates have been on fire recently, but I believe it is a little to soon for that, as the McCutchen problems with have an affect. Pirates can put up a fight for the wildcard, but the division will be out of reach. In the AL, the Tigers may have Sanchez injury problems at the moment, but with Scherzer, Price, and Verlander still on the mound they should not have much of a problem. They only team to worry about is the Royals who have won 8 of the last 10, including winning a series in Oakland, being the first team to do that since April. The Tigers should be able to hold on, as the Royals pitching staff is not strong enough to hold everyone off.

In the West, The A's have been the best team in baseball for a while. But the next best is right behind them with the Angels. Lester has looked amazing on the mound in Oakland and the A's continue to win games. Though they no longer have Cespedes and have a harder time scoring, they will take their division with the easier schedule and will leave the Angels with the wildcard. In the NL, the Dodgers has risen over the Giants struggling. The current 3.5 game lead should be easy to hold for the Dodgers even with their lose of Beckett. The Giants have shown no sign of getting hot, with Pence and Sandoval the only bats that bring in any runs. The Giants had to place Belt back on the DL, losing another weapon yet again. Pagan recently came back, but the Giants are winless in all his starts. The Dodgers are doing what the Giants can't, and are bringing in runs at a more frequent rate. With Gordon stealing bases and getting in scoring position, it takes less hits to bring in the runs.

So take note! AL: Athletics, Orioles, and Tigers. With Angels and Royals fighting in wildcard.
While in the NL: Dodgers, Cardinals, and Nationals. While the Brewers and Giants make the wildcard.
Second runners would be Yankees, Blue Jays, and with their trades Mariners in the AL. While the Pirates, Braves, and Reds have a shot in the NL.
Playoff predictions will come at the start of the postseason...keep checking in for more sports news!!
