Record set in his own way

Yusmeiro Petit set a new MLB record today in San Francisco, as he retired the 46th straight batter he faced over a span of eight games, six of them being from out of the bullpen. Today Petit retired the first eight Colorado Rockies that stepped up to the plate to break Mark Buehrle's record of 45 set in 2009. Charlie Culberson was the last better Petit needed to break the record and he did exactly what his home fans were hoping for as he set Culberson down on strikes. Of course the Rockies pitcher Lyles ended Petit's streak with a double in the very next at bat, but that is just baseball for you.  Petit got the win in todays game, as the Giants took it 4-1 over Colorado and the Giants have some decision making to do if they should keep Petit in the rotation after his great start, as he was filling in for the slumping Tim Lincecum today. Congratulations to Petit, as his win today helps the Giants hold the 2nd wildcard seat.
Further NL West news, Scott Van Slyke of the Los Angeles Dodgers came of the game in Arizona last night with an ankle sprain. While moving across the outfield Van Slyke took a bad step that resulted to his injury. He is not expected to miss much time if any, but the Dodgers can thank him and his hot bat for their increasing lead in the division. On a bit of a funny note, Van Slyke blames the grass at Chase Field for his injury.
In transaction news, there have been a lot of claims on waivers that have resulted in no deals found. It may just be me, but I am used to teams finding deals a majority of the time. Justin Mornuea was claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers, but they were unable to make a deal with the Rockies. In another example, the Athletics claimed Yunel Escobar from the Rays, but again no deal was made. These playoff potential teams are all looking for players to add to give them bench depth, fill in for injuries, or be that starter at a certain position they have been needing. Lots of players have been clearing waivers as well. The A's, though I don't think they really needed him, made a deal with the Rangers and acquired Geovany Soto to add their fourth catcher to the roster. A more impactive trade, the Angels picked up Gordon Beckham from the White Sox for a player to be named later. The second base position has been one the Angels have needed a bit of help in. Beckham on the Angel roster now gives them a bat that can provide clutch extra base hits, including the homerun he hit just yesterday against Miami.
Players who were claimed today are Jason Nix by the Royals and Nolan Reimold by the Diamondbacks. Another noticeable signing is outfielder Chris Young, as the Yankees signed him to a minor league deal. Young showed his great bat in his days with Arizona, but since his time with the Mets he has had a harder time showing any consistency batting .205 this season. Young should make a good addition to the injury plagued Yankees in an outfield where he will join starters Ellsbury and Gardner, along with Beltran, Ichiro, and Prado in right field.
None of the division battles are over, as things are staying intense in the AL West and NL Central, while the Wildcard fights look to go until the last day of the season.
