Week 1 of the preseason starts this Thursday, meaning it is time to launch season #100's early picks for this years Super Bowl. We have some big favorites already, with odds as low as 6/1 at the Vegas sports books. With four weeks of preseason football ahead of us, the lines can still move in either direction thanks to things such as injuries, new signings, and extended contracts. But here is what should catch your attention when deciding your future bets going into the upcoming NFL season.
Right now the two big favorites are the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, both currently sitting at 6/1 odds. The Patriots are currently in a celebratory mood with the two year extension with Tom Brady who continues to follow his goal of playing until the age of 45. Being the former champs, a lot of people have confidence in aging Tom Brady and his team that only got younger. New England had 10 picks in the draft, adding key pieces along with some big free agent deals including DE Michael Bennett. The big question is, can Brady and the Pats make it all the way again without Gronk?
The Chiefs were on fire last season, looking unstoppable at one point. But this offseason has not been the friendliest. They have had their issues with Hill and Hunt, leading to one of them departing and a big piece of their offense now playing for a conference rival. Now I'd think, big deal with a guy like Mahomes taking the snaps. But now even the Chiefs QB is facing issues, as word of illegal athletic enhancers have been in his use. Mahomes denies it, claiming what he uses is not illegal but this is an extra bit of drama the Chiefs did not need as they prepare for the season. But unless a large suspension some how becomes a factor, don't lose your faith in the Chiefs to quickly. They have taken the AFC West three years in a row and are looking for a promising year from Sammy Watkins who caught 73 percent of passes last year. They only worry about if he can stay off the IR, as they will need him healthy to keep the double team from constantly surrounding Kelce. 6/1 odds are not bad, but there may be other teams you see more fit with better payouts this season.
The next two teams both sitting at 10/1 odds to take home the title in Miami are the best of friends. Yeah right. The Rams and Saints should provide viewers with a great matchup on September 15th after last years NFC Championship. The Rams added some good veteran pieces in names such as Eric Weddle and Clay Matthews, but I am going into this season questioning what they have left in the tank to get their team the title. Aaron Donald was ranked the #1 player and with good reason, but he won't be able to carry them all the way. I am almost very nervous about Gurley and how much of him the Rams will get this year. Will his knee cause issues for the team? And can third round pick Darrell Henderson fill in if they lose him for a long duration?
The Saints have been busy this offseason extending Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, keeping two big weapons in the picture for Brees. The Saints also picked up Jared Cook and Latavius Murray to add the offense, as 10/1 odds seem very friendly in my opinion. What I am most excited to see however, is how the Saints fit Taysom Hill into the offense again. He was there for big third down plays, playing RB, WR, and QB, as he proved himself to be a valuable and clutch player. Utilizing him more should be very productive and help their offense get down the field.
The next four teams are all rocking 14/1 odds prior to the preseason other than the Hall of Fame Game. First the Colts look like a team ready to have their year. Andrew Luck is one of the best, but like usual he is already dealing with injury problems. This time it is the calf, but on the bright side it looks like he shouldn't miss much more than another week. The addition of Devin Funchess should go great with Hilton and Ebron, as Luck will have a good amount of targets to throw to now. The big pick up however I think is Justin Houston. The guy has 78.5 career sacks and is going to bring a heavy pressure that will help get Luck better field position.
Green Bay has a top-10 defense for the time since 2010 when they won the Super Bowl thanks to a couple big free agent signings of players such as Za'Darius Smith. They have their new young coach in action with 39 year old Matt LaFleur calling the shots. We will see how he and Rodgers get along, as that will end up being a huge factor especially if they were to make the playoffs. The Packers are a very talented team, but do deal with the Vikings and Bears up there in the North. They have a tough task ahead of them, I would want something a little better than 14/1 if betting the Packers right now.
Carson Wentz needs to stay healthy if the Eagles want to win it all this season. With Foles now down south in Jacksonville, the Eagles will need to protect Wentz and get off some quick pass plays to limit his time holding the ball. With Ertz and Goedert, they do have one of the best catching TE duos. They do face a tough period later in the season against the Bears, then Patriots, and Seahawks. I would say 14/1 doesn't meet my level of interest for risk with the Eagles either.
Then there were the Bears. Khalil Mack is a beast and that Bears defense will be one that is not easy to get through. Mitch Trubisky will be the true difference maker this season though, as he will be threatening franchise records and blowing us all away with his numbers. He has another year under his belt and will break through, making him one of the big pickups for fantasy team owners. The Beats should easily start 4-1 before their early bye. The goal will be to stay healthy, as they meet the Packers, Chiefs, and Vikings at the end of the season.
Other teams to keep an eye on would be the Chargers, as they currently have 16/1 odds. They just need to figure out what to do with Gordon and how to get him back in action before the season to become a real contender again. Then the Browns and Steelers who each have good teams put together, but we just are not sure they have the chemistry to win it all. And finally the Cowboys who like the Chargers need to lock down their RB as Elliot still wants his extension. Those last three teams each have 20/1 odds.
For my early prediction on the 2020 Super Bowl, we will get a great game battled out with key defensive plays making the difference.
