Extensions

Which team made top story today, the Mariners believe it or not. I am glad to hear some good news about them after all of the criticism about signing Jason Bay.  Felix Hernandez has signed a seven year deal for $175 million making him the highest paid pitcher in baseball history.  He has been one of the best in recent seasons and is showing his loyalty by sticking with his team that has been no where near the post season in his time with them.  This signing puts some big pressure on other GMs around the league with big name pitchers who need to be resigned soon. A good example would be Lincecum and the Giants, Tim Lincecum has a couple World Series rings and two Cy Young awards, so what kind of money will be needed to be sent his direction after King Felix receives such a deal? The Mariners were also getting a deal done with catcher Kelly Shoppach, signing him for one year and $1.5 million. The M's got Montero already who is a power hitting catcher and DH, so Shoppach will serve as a good back up. The Mariners were not done there though, they beat out the Twins, Pirates, Mets, Orioles, and Padres to pick up Joe Saunders on a one year deal, adding the lefty to their pitching rotation.
The Indians also looked into making a deal, signing Mike Aviles to a two year contract for $6 million. Aviles will server to be a good infield addition and a back up if Cabrera was to be dealt away or not resigned in the future. The Mets are staying contact with Michael Bourn talking about about three year deals, after signing Wright for so much though, they are not stretching their prices as high as Bourn appears to be looking.  But good news for the Mets, it appears they are going to get Lyons into their bullpen to help out late in the games.  When it comes to complete signings, the Giants have got Romo down for another two years for $9 million as he will most likely be taking over as the closer for good in San Francisco.
