Johan Santana turned 34 yesterday and though it is a day to celebrate, their is not much to be happy about for gaining another year. Santana appears to still be having shoulder problems all throughout spring training and they don't seem to be improving. Santana was hoping to be ready by opening day to lead the Mets off on the mound but it looks like he will start the year on DL where he finished last season. Left hander Jonathan Niese will now most likely be the first pitcher for the Mets. Santana has no expectation of when he will be back and is only hoping for the best. The Mets have run into an issue, as if they didn't already have enough problems going into a season where they will most likely be battling the Marlins for last place in the division. Once Santana is healthy look for the Mets to deal him away to another team for multiple prospects if their season is not going so well. His time looks to be running out, but he may still be a good addition to the lineup for a team looking to make the playoffs.
After a broken ankle, Jeter finally resumed the shortstop position for the first time yesterday playing the first few innings in the spring training game. He only handled the ball once on a simple grounder right at him. Jeter said he felt good, a little nervous but good as he looks to take his leadership role back over after falling out of the picture with the injury last October. All I got to say is, it is about time that there is some good news for the Yankees. They have been falling off the lineup and onto the DL like crazy recently. To get a player back is finally something Yankee fans are happy to see. For the good of the Yankees, hopefully Jeter can stay healthy and be there for his team with many of their missing players to start the season.
In other news the Brewers and outfielder Carlos Gomez have made an agreement to a four year $28.3 million dollar deal. The 27 year old would be up for free agency after this coming season, but the Brewers got the extension in and signed looking to keep their speedy center fielder. Gomez batted .260 last season with 19 homeruns and 37 stolen bases. He was one of only 5 players to be able to get more than 15 homeruns and more than 30 stolen bases. The Brewers are hoping for simliar numbers for the upcoming seasons. Gomez is a big part of the line up for the Brewers as they need to produce more runs to stay in the picture this season. Gomez needs to get on base in front of Ramirez and Braun to keep the uns coming and Brewers winning. So a higher batting average couldn't hurt, and with that new payroll he owes the team one.
