Due to a back to back seasons of injury issues and surgeries, 37 year old Lance Berkman decided its time to hang things up and retire. Berkman played only 73 games last season near his home town with the Rangers and hit .242. But his final season definitely does not define his career. Lance Berkman is a 6 time All-Star with a .293 career BA. He hit 366 homeruns got 1234 RBI's over his 15 years. He was known as one of the great clutch hitters in the lineup and will be know as one of the best switch hitters in the history of the game. Berkman spend 12 seasons with the Astros, in 2005 they went to the World Series but lost to the White Sox, and in 2010 the Astros dealt him to the Yankees. The Cardinals then signed him in 2011 where he had a monstrous season, blasting 31 homeruns and being a part of the Cardinals World Series championship team. Berkman hit .317 in the postseason over his career and had 41 RBI's within the 5 seasons he made the playoffs.
He spent his last season, the 2013 year with the Rangers, but with all his knee surgeries he was not much help when it came to offensive production. After both the 2012 and 13 seasons being the same, as he only hit 8 homeruns and knocked in 41 RBI's over the two seasons, he decided it was time to step away from the game. Expect to see Berkman's name get a good amount of votes in the Hall of Fame ballots, I am not saying he will make it, but there is a good chance. Berkman will be missed by many, as he had a great career being the face of Houston for so many years and big contributor with St. Louis.
